Bass Ricardo Lugo performs with all the opera companies of his native Puerto Rico. He has sung Ceprano  in Rigoletto, Don Alfonso in Cosi fan tutte, Dr. Grenvil in La Traviata, Colline in La Bohème, Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Angelotti in Tosca with Opera de Puerto Rico.  For Teatro de la Opera he added the roles of Pietro in Simon Boccanegra, Masetto in Don Giovanni, Tom in Un ballo in maschera, Crespel in Les Contes d’Hoffman, Frere Laurent in Romeo et Juliette, the Speaker in Die Zauberflöte, Ludovico in Otello and Bartolo in Le Nozze di Figaro.  He has also taken part in Culturarte’s Verdian Celebration, where he performed the roles of Dr. Grenvil in La Traviata and Ludovico in Otello opposite Carol Vaness, June Anderson and Placido Domingo conducted by Eugene Kohn.

Mr. Lugo made his American debut with the Aspen Music Festival performing Don Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Ludovico in Otello; the later he reprised with Opera Tampa. This past Summer Mr. Lugo was a member of the apprentice program of The Santa Fe Opera.

Upcoming engagements include the Ramfis in Aida with Mosaico Cultural in Guatemala as well with Opera of Puerto Rico, Happy in La Fanciulla del West with Tampa Opera, Tampa Fl., and a concert in Panama. This Fall Mr. Lugo will make his debut in Mexico singing Colline, which he will later reprise with Opera de Puerto Rico in Puerto Rico.

Mr. Lugo’s recent concert engagements include the Bach Magnificat, the Mozart Requiem, Frere Laureant in Berlioz’s Romeo et Juliette, and a tribute to Leonard Bernstein conducted by Sarah Caldwell, all with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra. He also performed Mozart’s Requiem with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with the Fort Myers Symphony Orchestra as Colline in a concert version of the opera LA Boheme. As part of the Casals Festival of Puerto Rico, Mr. Lugo performed the Monk in Don Carlo, under the baton of Jacques Delacote and the Timur in Turandot, under the baton of Maestro Richard Buckley.

Mr. Lugo was a second place winner of The Liederkranz Foundation and a finalist in the regional auditions of The Metropolitan Opera Auditions in New Orleans.  He was a recipient of the

Justino Diaz Scholarship given at the Metropolitan Opera Auditions-District of Puerto Rico. 

Mr. Lugo holds a master’s degree from The Julliard School where he was a student of Daniel Ferro and Steven Smith.
