Teaching Philosophy
Our teaching philosophy is based on the developmental approach to education which holds that children are natural learners who develop at different rates. We teach the mastery of basic academic skills, as well as the ability to think critically, creatively, and independently. Attention is given to balancing individual work activities with group activities. Emphasis is placed on respect and appreciation of each individual's contribution.

Curriculum
Our integrated and relevant curriculum draws heavily on Jean Piaget's model of early childhood education using a developmental approach. Teachers, using an understanding of the sequence of human development, are trained to identify learning activities and equipment that encourage students to work on skills that are well within their reach developmentally. We believe that children must be engaged in meaningful play in order to understand the world, themselves, and others. By interacting with caring adults and peers, as well as appropriate equipment the child strengthens his body, begins the process of cognitive stimulation, and lays the basis for a lifetime of social and emotional security. We believe the group living experience permits the opportunity of practicing a broad spectrum of social behavior in a safe, home-like environment.

We anticipate that each child will learn how to become responsible for and take pleasure in his learning. We honor each child's learning style and incorporate each child's unique contribution into the classroom curriculum. It is our responsibility to serve as guideposts and facilitators during this process. We are charged with the responsibility to be ever aware of opportunities to meet the developmental demands of each child and to offer up new challenges.

We believe that a valuable foundation for academic success is grounded in each child's opportunity to fail and try again without fear.  We encourage appropriate risk taking. We value more the road working towards improvement than the end result of perfection.

We encourage each child to explore autonomy and with that self help skills that are appropriate to learning personal responsibility. In addition, we encourage each child to explore our culturally and ethnically diverse community which enables children to experience life from many vantage points. The Staff and school activities reflects this respect and appreciation of cultural and ethnic diversity.

And finally, we are here to celebrate and revel in the uniqueness of each child and parent.
